4 Signs It’s Time To See A Dermatologist

It’s quite normal for a person to experience an issue with their skin. Whether unattractive or uncomfortable, it’s easy to become alarmed when you spot a mole or an unusual rash.  Some of these disorders can be easily treated with over-the-counter remedies while others will eventually fade away.

However, some skin irritations can be more serious that a minor annoyance.  Abnormalities – rashes in particular – may be a symptom of something much more severe such as Melanoma.

So when should you call your dermatologist?

To help you figure out whether you need to schedule an appointment with your dermatologists, here are some common warning signs that you should always be on the look out for.

1. You discover abnormal or discolored moles.

It’s quite common for people to have moles on their bodies. Moles and freckles aren’t alarming…at least until you notice them changing their shape, size or color.

Anytime you feel uneasy about a mole, you should seek attention from your dermatologist because it may be a harbinger of skin cancer. Moles can be easily removed and sent to a lab in order to check for cancerous cells. Early detection is the best way to ensure survival of skin cancer.

2. You begin sweating excessively

Sweating is a normal human process. It is the body’s way of cooling itself and removing toxins. However, there comes a time when the amount of sweat you produce becomes excessive. If you feel that you are sweating more than usual, you should contact your dermatologist immediately.

Excessive sweating may be an indication of a more serious condition called Hyperhidrosis. Excessive sweating could also be a byproduct of thyroid issues or diabetes. By consulting with your dermatologist, they will be able to help you identify the real issue and help determine an effective treatment plan.

3. Persistent Acne

Everyone experience an acne breakout because it is a normal part of life, especially during adolescence. Acne can also be a result of lifestyle issues such as hygiene, diet, stress, and environmental factors. Many cases of acne can be treated with over-the-counter remedies.

If, however, you have severe acne that does not improve overtime, you should contact your dermatologist. They will be able to help you uncover they underlying causes of your breakout as well as prescribe stronger remedies such as lotions and ointments.

4. You Have Persistent Rashes

Rashes are usually more annoying than they are severe. Most rashes occur due to allergies or other irritants, and can usually disappear on their own. But if you have a rash that refuses to go away and covers your entire body, there is a chance that it may be something more concerning such as an infection. To discover the cause of your rash, visit your dermatologist; they can provide a more accurate diagnosis.

When in doubt, seek medical attention.

Your skin is a complex organ that requires delicate care, special attention and true expertise for effective treatment for any condition. Think of it like this: When you have a toothache, you visit the Dentist. When you have a cold, you visit your primary care doctor. Why should you avoid seeing a Dermatologist if you’re having skin problems?

Whether or not you should schedule an appointment with a dermatologist is a judgment call and ultimately up to you.  But seeking the opinion of a professional Dermatologist can help determine whether a rash or mole is a cause for concern.
