Understanding Different Types of Moles: When to Be Concerned
Moles are typical skin growths that can develop on any part of your body. Understanding the different types of moles and knowing when to be concerned is essential for maintaining your skin health.
What Are Moles?
Moles, also known as nevi, are groupings of pigmented cells that resemble tiny, dark brown dots. They can vary in color, size, and form. The majority of moles are benign, but some can develop into melanoma, a severe form of skin cancer.
Common Types of Moles
The most common types of moles are the following:
Congenital Moles
Congenital moles are moles you’re born with. These moles are usually harmless, but larger congenital moles may have a slightly higher risk of developing melanoma, a type of skin cancer. It’s good to watch them and report any changes to our dermatologists.
Acquired Moles
Acquired moles develop after birth. These are the most common types of moles and can appear anywhere on your body. Generally harmless, you should monitor moles for any size, shape, or color changes.
Atypical Moles
Atypical moles, or dysplastic nevi, are larger and have an irregular shape or color. They may resemble melanoma but are usually benign. However, having atypical moles can increase your risk of melanoma, so regular skin checks are important.
When to Be Concerned About Moles
It’s important to know when a mole might be concerning. The ABCDE rule is a helpful guide:
- A – Asymmetry: One side of the mole looks different from the other side.
- B – Border: Edges are irregular, ragged, or blurred.
- C – Color: The color is not the same all over and may include shades of brown, black, pink, red, white, or blue.
- D – Diameter: The mole is larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), although melanomas can be smaller.
- E – Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape, or color.
If you notice some of these changes, it’s important to see a dermatologist promptly.
